Real life Superman

It is said, 'teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime.' Anand Kumar, who founded the ambitious and innovative educational program, 'Super 30', in the hinterlands of India, is doing just that. Armed with little else other than the courage of conviction and a will to persist, he selects 30 talented candidates each year from economically backward sections of society and trains them for the entrance exam of the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology, thereby saving a whole community, a village and the day!

About the Speaker

Anand Kumar

Founder, Super 30

Anand Kumar is ushering in a revolution in the hinterlands of India by equipping youth to dream big through his education initiative ‘Super 30’ in Patna, Bihar.  In 1994, he was admitted to Cambridge University but was unable to afford it after his father, a low paid postal employee, passed away.  In the last eight years of ‘Super 30’, Kumar, now a noted mathematics teacher, has coached a phenomenal 212 students, most first generation learners from rural, poor backgrounds, to pass the joint entrance test of the Indian Institute of Technology.  Time Magazine selected ‘Super 30’ in the Best of Asia 2010, and Discovery Channel made a documentary film on ‘Super 30’.

Untold Story

Anand was attacked by armed men hired by coaching Mafiosi, who did not want his style of coaching.  He survived, and undeterred, continued on his path to provide free food, lodging and free coaching to economically disadvantaged students.

most innovative school of the year by TIME mag... man !!! if one person can do so much . imagine the country with the population on 1.2 billion people can do :D

Frederick Dsouza

Vivek, i would say rest of the 1.2 billion people to start with can make sure they dont be an obstruction to anand kumar in whatever he does good and also not be obstruction to anyone who does good but encourage them in doing even better cause giving support of all kind is one form of receiving.

How can I guarantee that other people will return the favour?

You can't. This idea is about trust in humanity and the universe. That trust is your only guarantee. But also, it's about giving in a spirit that you don't even care if you receive, as the giving is just another form of receiving; if it makes you feel good, everything else is a bonus.
